FAQ

Here you can find frequently asked questions and most common issues, please make sure to read it before asking for help to save time

Is there a map available?

Yes! You can get acces to a google map on https://simfocus.com/autogen, or use littlenavmap to find out the ICAO of your departure helipad, search for it in the searchbox and select it there to be able to spawn on it

My world map lags extremely! How to prevent that?

You can use the worldmap filter available in downloads it’s an optional package that overwrites default worldmap filter settings. It requires you to use a 3rd party app such as the world map below, or littlenavmap to find out the ICAO of your departure helipad, search for it in the searchbox and select it there to be able to spawn on it

I have a scenery conflict! Can i somehow exclude one helipad from being autogenerated?

At the moment there‘s no way for you to do it, but message me and I‘ll get a custom pack without it for you! But please check if there really is a scenery conflict before messaging me, as most of these helipads shouldn‘t cause any big issues with sceneries.

Helipad is placed in a hill, or in a hole in the ground. Why?

That‘s because the source of elevation i use to flatten helipads isnt always same as the source asobo used for their terrain, this will sadly be happening until i found a way to improve that

Okay, so what is this sorcery?

Have you ever noticed that nearly every airport, airfield and many, many bush strips are available to choose from in the sim. But why limit yourself to just airports?

Here’s where my neat little tool comes in: MSFS Autogen Helipads

This simple tool downloads helipads data from openstreetmap and converts them into an .xml format that MSFS can understand, and compile into a scenery, which can be then visited inside the sim.

The tool isn’t just a mindless converter, as it takes many things into account about which you can read below:

Features? Here!

It all really depends on what data is available in openstreetmap, but:

  • It’s able to generate helipads with correct shapes and positions
  • It’s able to generate edge lighting around the helipad for pads that have “lit”=”yes” tag in OSM
  • It generates polygons that exclude buildings and vegetation
  • It can retrieve elevation data from opentopodata and apply terraforming
  • It will fetch names and ICAO codes from OSM if available
  • It’s able to adjust materials (paved or not for now) from OSM if available
  • It generates a .csv file with userpoints to be used in littlenavmap
  • Helipads that are grass, or that are within Photogrammetry areas are transparent

How to install

Once you get to the download page you will spot many different files to download, for simplicity let’s split them into three groups:
– Worldmap Filter – This is an optional package that overwrites default worldmap filter settings. It requires you to use a 3rd party app such as the world map below, or littlenavmap to find out the ICAO of your departure helipad, search for it in the searchbox and select it there to be able to spawn on it

– All Packs – This is just a one big download for all packs, it includes folders and .csv files. Folders are what goes into your community folder, csv files can either be disregarded, or used as userpoints with littlenavmap

– Insert countryname here – These are just packs with one area inside, same rules as will All Packs download apply

Does it have X helipad?

It may or it may not

Openstreetmap is mostly created by individuals like you! If you’re curious whether or not your local helipad is mapped already at openstreetmap.org, you can check it easily there.

If it’s there, it means it will be available in MSFS, if not – you can just add it! and it will appear with the next update of Autogen Helipads

Todo:

Main thing will be releasing the script itself, with some kind of GUI that also allows for excluding singular helipads (to avoid scenery conflicts)

Below you can find a map with all helipads currently available to download

For example, there’s 2079 helipads available in Germany and 1279 in Canada!

Note: The map might be slightly outdated and it’s recommended to use littlenavmap for flight planning

V1.0 18.1.2024

Initial Release – 23 Packs

V1.1 19.1.2024

Whole USA Is now available in 6 Packs

Terraforming now works outside of photogrammetry cities, there’s no need for Terraforming and No Terraforming packs anymore

Corrected issues with the world map on the website

New country – Japan

New elevation data source – SRTM (previously was ASTER)

V1.2 20.1.2024

Improved name fetching from OSM (previous max name length 15, now 48)

Lowered terraforming polygon priority to eliminate scenery conflicts

Changed the letter “H” to a Triangle for better aesthetics
Let me know what do you think about this

Improved transparency logic, you will now not see any ugly concrete polygons displaying over photogrammetry buildings

Added a worldmap filter package which hides packs from the worldmap. It requires you to use a 3rd party app such as the world map below, or littlenavmap to find out the ICAO of your departure helipad, search for it in the searchbox and select it there to be able to spawn on it.

Many backend fixes you don‘t see, now it‘s much easier for me to generate updates – previously generating and preparing 10 packages for upload was around an hour, now all 33 packs available take around 30 minutes
